Letter from the

nclca 2022 conference chair

When I think about the NCLCA annual conference, it reminds me of a family reunion. We share our trials and tribulations, offer support for each other, learn new ways to manage our own challenges, and come back to our institutions with new energy and life.  We get to reconnect with our long lost family after some time and welcome new members into the family.

This morning I was watching Disney’s “Encanto” with my 2-year-old daughter and my mind started to wander to all of the things I needed to do that day. I started to get overwhelmed.  Then I remembered I had an NCLCA Board meeting and I would get the opportunity to chat with some of my best friends and colleagues and give them updates on our conference planning. There was something about watching “Encanto” that made me reflect on how much the NCLCA organization is a family. If you haven’t seen the movie (SPOILER ALERT!) it is about a family, the Madrigals.  The Madrigals are an extraordinary family who live hidden in the mountains of Colombia in a charmed place called the Encanto. The magic of the Encanto has blessed every child in the family with a unique gift - every child except Mirabel. When Mirabel learns that the family is losing their magic, she sets out to find out what is happening, and save her family and their magical house.  Turns out, Mirabel saves the family’s magic.  In the movie, her brother, Bruno says “You’re exactly what this family needs.”

This quote really resonated with me.  NCLCA wouldn’t be what it is without YOU!

You’re exactly what this family needs.

As we look forward to our annual conference in October, I encourage you to reflect and remember why you joined this amazing organization in the first place, for me it was the feeling of “finding my people”, or “my family”.  Whether it be your first annual conference or your twenty-fifth, we hope that you will feel the love from our NCLCA family, reconnect with your long lost relatives, and join us for our first fully in person conference since 2019!
